Our Story

Some of the highlights of our journey to building a resource center for our houseless community in Deming.

  • Deming Silver Linings formed in November 2016 when a group of concerned citizens gathered to address the issues of homelessness in Deming and Luna County.

  • In May 2017 we gained our 501(c)3 status.

  • At the same time, we began a twice weekly (Wed and Sat) distribution of non-perishable food and beverages, personal care items, and gently used clothing.

  • We have a 24-hour accessible port-a-john.

  • We also provide a set of clean clothes, access to an indoor shower, and laundry that they can access during our hours of operation.

  • We now serve a hot mid-day meals on Mondays thru Thursdays.

  • The biggest need is still safe and sustainable housing.

  • We support the "Housing First" model which advocates providing a safe and personal space for homeless persons first, then providing needed services and counseling.

I am retired after 39 years with The Boeing Co. in Seattle. I have been a Deming resident since early 2019. I enjoy hiking, camping, backpacking and long walks with my partner of 40 years. I volunteer with RoadRunner Food Bank, providing food for around 300 Luna County families and I joined Deming Silver Linings in the spring of 2021. I like that there's a convenient resource for the homeless and less fortunate citizens in our community.

I have lived in Deming since 1991, leaving only temporarily to continue my education. I work for Deming Public Schools as a librarian at Red Mountain Middle School. I joined Deming Silver Linings because I believe as a community kindness and helping one another no matter who we are or what challenges we are facing in life is what creates a stronger-happier community.
